A business delegation from Brisbane, Australia’s fastest growing capital city, will be visiting Manama, Abu Dhabi and Doha in February to strengthen trade and investment relationships with businesses and governments.

Following a mission in 2007, the Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Councillor Campbell Newman will again lead the delegation, accompanied by over 13 prominent business leaders and the city’s official marketing agency, Brisbane Marketing.

Brisbane Marketing will showcase the City’s economy and new investment and trade opportunities the agency is leading for the region.

Brisbane Marketing CEO John Aitken who will accompany the Lord Mayor of Brisbane on the delegation said that government and business relations are an essential part of furthering Brisbane, Bahrain and the UAE’s trade interests.

“Since our visit in 2007, Brisbane has seen so much progress and economic growth which has been fuelled by long-term investment and infrastructure plans. In our visit in 2009, we plan to showcase Brisbane’s transformation and explore promising areas of co-operation with the Manama, Abu Dhabi and Doha,” Mr Aitken said.

“To help sustain Brisbane as the fastest growing capital city in Australia, Brisbane Marketing together with Brisbane City Council is leading a number of strategic initiatives which offer many possibilities for businesses and investors.

“In 2008, we released a 10 year tourism investment and infrastructure plan for the Brisbane region. This plan provides a direction for the sustainable development of our tourism industry and also identifies more than 80 investment opportunities.

“These investment opportunities vary in terms of their strategic advantage for the Brisbane region, such as the Brisbane CBD hotel plan, the Brisbane Terminal study and new eco-resorts.

“Brisbane Marketing also plans to showcase Brisbane’s expertise in education, the City’s largest export industry.

“To help Brisbane become Australia’s globally recognised Knowledge City by 2026, we are leading a city-wide program to promote and develop Brisbane as the global Australian player in the education sector through our Study Brisbane initiative.

“The objective of the Study Brisbane program is to help international students who are considering studying overseas to choose the incredible lifestyle and quality education that Brisbane offers. We welcome students from all over the world to come and pursue any academic discipline, and to become a part of the innovation, creativity and independent thinking that sets Brisbane apart.

“In addition, we plan to showcase Brisbane’s international strengths in emerging knowledge sectors – from life sciences, information communication technology, mining technology, innovative manufacturing and the creative industries. The growth of these emerging sectors plus the commitment by our local and state governments is developing Brisbane’s reputation as a global knowledge city.

“I’m confident our second trade mission to the Gulf will help to reinforce Brisbane’s trade connections with Manama, Abu Dhabi and Doha, and in turn this will lead to a more secure economic future for our Cities.

The Brisbane business delegation which begins in Abu Dhabi on 1 February and concludes in Manama, Bahrain on 9 February, includes meetings and presentations organised by Promoseven, Trade Queensland and Brisbane City Council’s direct links with businesses and governments.
