“Brisbane will keep the pressure on in key areas of infrastructure, planning, investment and sustainability in the face of the economic crisis”, Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said today. In a national first, Brisbane is hosting the State of the Capital Conference on March 18 2009 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. The event will spur interest and debate on key economic indicators, such as investment, trade, planning and infrastructure, as well as explore how the city is currently perceived in Australia and the world. The Conference will feature some of Brisbane’s thought leaders and power brokers, such as Professor Brendan Gleeson from Griffith University, Professor Peter Newman from Curtin University and Board Member of Infrastructure Australia, Steve Greenwood from Property Council of Australia, Cr Jane Prentice from Brisbane City Council, and national tourism expert, Chris Brown from TTF. The conference will also commemorate the first 12 months of Campbell Newman’s second term as Lord Mayor of Brisbane. “There is no better time than now to examine our challenges and constraints while the world is riding out the economic storm,” Campbell Newman said. “The economic decisions we make today will have enormous long-term implications on the prosperity of this great city and this event will help to turn the spotlight on those most vital issues affecting Brisbane now and in the future. “There’s no doubt Brisbane is in a position of strength, and I intend to create opportunity for Brisbane in this global downturn, to ensure growth and high standards of living.” “I look forward to delivering my address outlining the vision for the city’s economic development, investment and trade outlooks.
