What role will innovation play in Brisbane’s response to the global economic crisis?

Brisbane’s CitySmart Innovation Festival launch event brings five business leaders, opinion makers, scientists, and gurus together to unearth the question at hand: “The digital revolution provided an exit strategy for the 1990s recession – what innovations can lead us out of the current global economic crises?”

Brisbane Marketing together with Lord Mayor Campbell Newman is proudly hosting the CitySmart Innovation Festival launch event on Thursday 21 May. The event will create a lively panel discussion on the role innovation will play in the global economic recovery, moderated by ABC New Inventors’, James O’Loghlin.

The event will also launch the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards 2009 (LMBA), the City’s premier awards program that showcases Brisbane companies at the forefront of innovation.

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said there has been no better time than now for Brisbane to host the CitySmart Innovation Festival.

“Brisbane and cities around the world are faced with the some of the most complex challenges today. The CitySmart Innovation Festival is all about promoting new world thinking and that’s exactly what we need during these current times,” Cr Newman said.

“The Festival will also showcase Brisbane’s progress to becoming Australia’s most sustainable city. Sharing the City’s fresh talent, ideas and technology with businesses and individuals around the country is also an important aspect of the program.

“Brisbane’s rise as a centre of excellence in sustainability across Australia and the world has been made possible by the many companies and individuals dedicated to innovation. That is why I’m proud to launch the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards 2009 with Brisbane Marketing.”

Brisbane Marketing, the city’s economic development agency, hosted the CitySmart Innovation launch event and is managing the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards for the fourth successive year.

Brisbane Marketing CEO, John Aitken said events like the CitySmart Innovation Festival and LMBA contribute directly to the city’s prominence as a New World City.

“Brisbane Marketing is committed to growing the City’s exceptional talent base and rewarding new world thinking. Through events such as the CitySmart Innovation Festival and LMBA, we will ensure that we remain ahead of emerging global trends,” Mr Aitken said.

“The festival will showcase global innovators and entrepreneurs that provide sustainable solutions to the challenges of climate change.

“On a local level, we’re proud to be managing the LMBA awards again, which recognises and rewards companies and individuals that have contributed to the City’s new world thinking.”
